fabric covering question

I bought an airplane recently covered in fabric. Don't know what brand. It appears to be iron on covering with the color imbedded in the adhesive. If I rub it with alcohol the color will be picked up on my paper towel. If I spray water on it, it does not really soak n, but the fabric gets wet. Plane has never been exposed to fuel / oil, I think the oil may soak through the fabric ???

Do I need to do something to the plane to seal it ? How am I supposed to clean it ? If I decide to repaint it do I need to do something special, or just start spraying with Lustrekote ?

Thanks in advance, Charlie

If the color comes off in alcohol, then it was probably not painted. You need to get at least one coat of clear fuel proofer on it otherwise it will soak with oil. My recommendation would be polyurethane paine with the flexible additive from an automotive paint shop. This will keep the paint from cracking over open structures.

Sig makes a petroleum-based model cleaner which I have used with doped planes and 21st. Century fabric, and the color is not affected. I get it at my hobby shop.
