Re: building tools list needed

On 8/20/2003 1:08 AM Ted shuffled out of his cave and grunted these great (and sometimes not so great) words of knowledge:

If you do not already have these items, it is a good place to start. Fuselage building jig, wing building jig. If you do not want to buy them, they can be easily made. Fuselage jig -

None ever do.

Tools can only take you so far. Experience, patience, practice are what you need to make the "perfect" plane. Don't expect each plane to come out perfectly, just try to improve the quality of each plane you build.

That said, most planes can be built with the most basic of tools. A large, flat building surface is the most important. A sharp Xacto knife, and lots of spare blades is the next most useful tool. Sanding blocks of various sizes and 80, 150, and 220 grit sandpaper are the next thing you need.

I look at each project as an opportunity to make a perfect model. I never do, but I keep on trying. Beyond the few basics, tools make little difference, other than convenience and something to fiddle with.

If anyone is looking for Howard Sullivans Fuselage Jig page that Ted Campanelli referenced,  it has apparently moved to:

his wing jig is at:

or the main page is at:

those items are off of the "Construction" option in his left hand menu.
