Re: Job Opportunity: Control Systems Engineer

I stopped being a field engineer 2 years ago. I  covered the western US to
Panama. I made more than your stated maximum and quit cause it was not
enough money to have real guns pointed at ya.
I was strip searched in Mexico City, once. And had machine guns pointed at
me in Oakland CA.

Good luck with your search. Your dealing with non Christian countries.  The
price for me to do that would be well into 6 figures.

It's not a job.  It's an adventure.

Re: Job Opportunity: Control Systems Engineer

I like the sentiment, but which job are you referring to?  His or mine?? ;-)
:-)

SQLit, two points:
1) Compared to the US, Australia/New Zealand are pretty good places to work.
Unlike you guys, we have legislated standards over here (generally the IEC
ones) that are common across the entire region and they get adhered to or
the company directors get hauled into Court.  We have OH&S legislation which
is even more strict, and nothing like you mention could ever happen here
without making front-page news for weeks.

True, Singapore/Malaysia/PNG/Solomons/Fiji/Tahiti are a little different,
but with those places it is get in and get out as fast as you can - whilst
still enjoying your tropical holiday.  We haven't lost anyone yet. ;-)

2) I'm after a design engineer really - the field part is just a bit of it -
and yes, it is an adventure - we do the work that is too difficult for the
Big Boys, and, if you design something, I expect you to get it working.

;-)

it -

I have only heard of good things about Australia and New Zealand, beside
ya'll speak English.    I was referring to the non English speaking
countries.  I have worked with and supervised some Muslims, they can be
challenging.  My experience is they just do not seem to have the same
concepts. Not that they are dumb or that they do not know the job.

Staying away from the big boys is a good concept. I worked for CH, doing
automation work.  I usually only got the projects that were in the toilet so
far you need a torch to read the proposal.
Humor has it that Eaton is bringing the group back. Cute considering they
shut it down about a year ago.

Seriously, You actually got/get to visit places during the travels?  I took
a day off to do some site seeing in Vera Cruz, Mexico. I was almost drawn
and quartered for it. Management made me pay for the room and meals.  At
least on their spread sheet I paid for it. Your company sounds like the
exception to the rule here in the states. The MBA's that are in control
expect field engineers to be 90-95% productive. That is close to impossible.
Especially when your already in the hole after for your vacation and
holidays are accounted for.

I sincerely hope that you find some one who will fill your need.

Re: Job Opportunity: Control Systems Engineer

Hello SQLit,

Hmm, so did I. Plus Buddhists, Sikhs and lots of others. It was never a
problem. The only challenges were sometimes a slight language barrier
but even that was always overcome somehow.

Ok, there was one problem. At lunchtime or potluck events everyone
wanted to show off their ethnic cooking so many of us gained quite a few
pounds ;-)
