A vivid account of a lengthy journey around the north of America, from Quebec and New York through Utah to San Francisco and then on to Washington and covers the mineral resources of these areas. Vivian was M.P. for Swansea, where he ran a copper smelting business. Vivian visited Quebec, New York, Pittsburg, Sarnia, Chicago, Salt Lake City, San Francisco, St. Louis, Washington, Virginia, and Cincinnati. His narrative includes chapters on Mormonism, the Nevada silver mines, American hotels, political parties, and mineral resources. Vivian was an enormously successful metallurgist, and Welsh politician; and his observations on his tour from coast to coast and back reflect his astuteness in these and other fields.
