Hi - looking at getting m indstorms for my children who were blown away
by it at a science museum recently. Thing is we can't stretch to £160
for a new 2.0 set (:-() so I'm checking out ebay... however there
doesn't appear to have been any 2.0 auctions so all we have to go on as
a ball park price is around £50 for a 1.5 set (which we can stump up
:-)
So 0 the big quesytion is... what IS the REAL difference between 1.5
and 2.0? I've deja'd but all I;ve found is fairly wooly suggestions
revolving around software versions (if so - is the updated s/w
downloadable/buyable seperately for how much?) and RAM sizes in the
micro-computer (if so - what is the real impact of this... e.g. are
you stuick with the 3 or 4 or whatever starter suggestions cos anything
else requires the RAM that isn't there?).
In short - what is the REALISTIC difference between 1.5 and 2.0?
cheers!!! TIA!

Re: what IS the difference between RIS 1.5 and 2.0?
update to that if you hunt abound on ebay etc.
No reason not to get 1.5 really.
You can get extra bits off ebay easily, and also check out www.Lugnet.com

http://peeron.com/scans/3804-1/ 2.0
These are the inventories of the two sets. The software is different and the
2.0 uses a usb tower. I would buy the 1.5 You will enjoy your investment.

Re: what IS the difference between RIS 1.5 and 2.0?
If you can get a Mindstorms 1.5 cheaply, grab it.
The USB tower is a bit nicer and easier with newer PCs. The older Serial
Port tower needs a battery, but i easier to use with lnux if you ever get
into that sort of think.
There are some really fantastic books on Mindtorms available, have a look on
Google.
I think I bought a 1.5, got the upgrade for 2.0 and bought a USB tower (and
sold the serial port one). I picked up loads of extras off ebay and
bricklink.
Must get it out of the cupboard really. My 8 year old should be ready for it
now and he's a Lego fiend any way.
Re: what IS the difference between RIS 1.5 and 2.0?
The 1.5 RCX is very useful becuase it has a power jack on the back, but
the 2.0 RCX has a superior design. I think the instruction manuals
between 1.5 and 2.0 differ, (personally I like the one from 1.5) and the
software for the 2.0 is a lot better. Plus the IR tower for 2.0 is usb,
so it is really easy to use. It really doesn't matter which one you get.
Both are essentially the same thing and have the same purpose. So no
matter which one you get, your kids will have fun with it.
Re: what IS the difference between RIS 1.5 and 2.0?
In fact there is no RCX 1.5 brick, only a RCX 1.0 from RIS 1.5 sets,
and these generally come without power jack.
However, there are RCX 1.0 with power jack from LEGO Dacta,
and in some early RIS sets (1.0 and a few very early 1.5 I heard).
