2 circuits on 1 circuit breaker ?

I know that was true once, but even then splices were allowed by exception under certain circumstances.

The latest codebook I have (2002) now says,

312.8 Enclosures for Switches or Overcurrent Devices. Enclosures for switches or overcurrent devices shall not be used as junction boxes, auxiliary gutters, or raceways for conductors feeding through or tapping off to other switches or overcurrent devices, unless adequate space for this purpose is provided. The conductors shall not fill the wiring space at any cross section to more than 40 percent of the cross-sectional area of the space, and the conductors, splices, and taps shall not fill the wiring space at any cross section to more than 75 percent of the cross-sectional area of that space.

Yep. If you're gonna say it's there, I'm gonna make you go get the book and look it up, because I think it isn't there.

So your opinion is right-er than his? He has to prove his side? Like he cares if you believe him? It's a pissin' contest, fercrissake. "yes", "no", "yes", "no", ... Welcome to Usenet.

People do this all the time: "Cite, please?", like this is some kind of intellectual forum, or court. If it matters to you, look it up. If it doesn't matter, let it go.

What's worked for me as a homeowner is to go down to city hall, ask for the oldest inspector there, show him my sketches and let him mark them up the way he'd like the job done.

My brother is currently a state licensed master electrician with an electrical contractor license. When he built his house he was a journeyman. He was trying so hard to get a perfect job done so the inspector would not ding him and I admired his efforts.

Being older and hopefully wiser in the ways of how things are, I told him that if he makes it perfect the guy is going to find something real or contrived to show he is doing his job and it might not fun to fix so leave the inspector a gimmie or two.

My brother took my advice.

I did our previous house and drew a great guy as inspector. His "find" was the missing cork gasket on the top feed into the meter box - he just "happened" to have one in his car, and "no you don't have to take everything apart to install it - just take out the bolts and force the scepter conduit fitting up enough to break one side of the gasket and slip it into place" He was impressed by the fact that not only had I tied the supply pipes to the kitchen sink in to the ground conductor, I had also grounded the copper drain pipe. In return for the gasket, I provided him a used ground clamp for his own kitchen drain line. Gerry :-)} London, Canada

Smart. Been there. But it gets really frustrating when they miss the "gimme" and try to ding you on something you did not do. (I save fixing those little gimme items for last, and fix them to kill time while waiting for the inspector to show up - If he gets there early and doesn't gig them, I can get out a bit early.)

Like this one old building where we cleaned up after another Electrician who goofed up a simple panel change (surface mounted the new panel can over the old one with splices inside the old can underneath - ouch!) and several added receptacle circuits...

Mr. Inspector wanted every single thing brought up to current code, even where it met code and was approved when the building was built.

"Repeat after me: We didn't touch that. It's Grandfathered."

My advice to brother on this sort of thing is buy a digicam, take before and after pictures to CYA.
