At least he's wearing his safety glasses

I found this through reddit, and thought a few of you might get a laugh:

Ohmygod and it doesn't look like he is using pin holes to reduce light intensity either. I sure hope he has his eyes closed.

I'd like to see the dance he/she does when a spark sets it on fire.

NOW, you know why China can can produce products cheaper than we can. Not only do they have "slave" labor, but they seem to have no OSHA or EPA. ....Not that the EPA would be involved with this particular article.

I've also seen a picture of an Indian guy welding by looking through a slit between his fingers!

I'm pretty sure I saw that on Monster Garage or some other showcase of idiocy

Of course I also assume he must be doing maintenance welding work on a Chinese fireworks assembly line about 10 feet away from the main gunpowder storage bin. Oh yeah. Dave

--And we wonder why Chinese goods are so cheap, eh? Funny how the price drops when the workers are treated like slaves..

After glancing at the supercilious comments on this photo, I would direct readers to *any* episode of "American Chopper" which features Mig/Tig welding. Even allowing for TV bravado...

They have them, but they're well paid (off).

It's ironic that they still have the balls to call it "The _People's Republic of China". What they need is a worker's revolution.

Rule of thumb: any nation calling itself "The People's Republic of thus-and-such" or the "so-and-so Democratic Republic" -- isn't.

In most of the world the welding hoods we take for granted are non-existent. They routinely arc weld with simple goggles, or a lens held in front of their face. I have seen welding glasses made from beer bottles and pieces of charred plastic.

We have a greater expectation of life. We actually plan on living a long life with reasonable health.

They have no such illusions.

It looks like the paper is only to protect the face from splatter, you can see the eyeballs so there must be holes to see thru. No protection from intense light and UV.

Fifteen years ago I've seen welders in the Philippines not using any shades, hoods nor gloves joining together what looked like custom steel fences. They just glance at the correct spot to start the arc and then look away to continue on with the rest of the beads through sheer imagination and muscle memory. I don't know how or why they do what they do but I suspected that they just can't afford to buy safety equipment..and, considering the difficulty of finding jobs over there they would do anything just to have a job to survive, even in the stupidest way. What's funny too is that when you point out the danger to their health associated with their welding methods they would counter that only " weak and pussies" wear hoods and shades or any safety equipment we have deemed standard and extremely necessary in our advanced industrial countries. They also seem to think it's a badge of special feat or accomplishment to boast to be able to do it their ways.

Pick a construction site at random, anywhere in the U.S., and ask the guys working there why they're not wearing eye and ear protection. I bet you get basically the same response. It amazes me to see men operating concrete saws, jackhammers, and framing nailers with nothing over their eyes or ears. And I'll bet that most of them wouldn't wear hard hats or safety shoes, either, if their employers didn't require it.

Makes me cringe about as much as those guys I see welding with cotton t shirts and cotton plastic dot gloves ...........
