Bending Squars Tubing

Currently we have a production project that requires bending 3/4" square tubing. Each assembly requires 24 pcs of tubing. Both ends of each tube is bent on a 2-1/2" radius in a dieset on an arbor press, the excess is manually trimmed on a band saw, then each end is welded in place. This process is slow, and the accuracy is not what we wish it to be. If a preformed bend was available that could be welded to a straight tube, our production efficiency would increase and the appearance and accuracy of the finished part would be greatly enhanced. We have noticed several sources offer varying styles of joints for round tubing but have yet to find anything for square tubing. We would greatly appreciate any information anyone would wish to share about whether preformed joints for square tubing are available, or any other comments or suggestions anyone would wish to offer. Thanks, K.

Check with an awning manufacturer. Maybe the builders of snowmobile trailer covers.

Any good tube bending shop can crank out those by the thousands. You have your choice between a crush bend (inside is heavily deformed) or mandrel bent (bend area is pretty close to original cross section) Small shop will be happy with orders of 100 and up, larger shop will want quantities of 1000 plus. You might find that prices are very reasonable, especially in larger quantities. I would expect to get a 'J' bend (long tube with a bend on one end) for around the cost of the tube plus $.50 to $.75 for the bend operation.

To locate a local supplier, look in the yellow pages under 'tube fabrication' or 'tube bending'. Or call your tube supplier and ask who does bending.
