Why did ancient lamps have that shape?

It is shaped like a shoe with a handle in the rear, the add fuel hole in the middle and the wick in the front.

Why did they have this long shape? Like the one Aladdin rubbed.

I've always guessed that it was to keep the flame at a distance from the pool of oil in the filler hole, so it wouldn't ignite the whole pool.

But that's just a guess.
