If you're a clueless newbie like I am, you may find the following
tutorial useful:

It describes how to interface a Pololu "Micro Dual Serial Motor
Controller" with a Macintosh (though the same instructions would apply
to a Windows or Linux machine as well), and get it to control a motor
from a REALbasic application.
