French WW2 aircraft paints?

Hello all,

After nearly two years hiatus, I have space to build again. Hoorah!!!

I rashly bought a Pegasus 1:72 Arsenal VG33 to build, and while it looks nice and easy, I f Name: FS: Xtracolor:

----- --- ----------

Khaki: FS30099 X384

Gris Bleu Clair (light blue gray): FS35189 X389

Gris Bleu Fonce (dark blue gray): FS35164 X395

Terre de Sienne (earth brown): FS30117 X387

Now, here in Japan I cannot find Xtracolor, and none of the Gunze Sangyo, Mr. Color, Tamiya or Pitroad paints seem to match. I don't know what Tamiya's and Hasegawa's Dewoitine D.520 and so on use, but maybe mixes?

Hannants sells Xtracolor of course, but I can only find X395 in their catalogue at present.

Does anyone know of suitable vendors for these WW2 French aircraft colors?

Thanks in advance,

I knew it was inevitable for this tasteless joke to appear, and deliberately avoided it in my post, even in jest, so that *perhaps* some of the French contingent might see fit to supply. Thanks for torpedoing that, Mr highty-tighty schmock.

Hi e, yup I'll have to check US places now too, I thought going to the source was the quickest, and I see the Xtracolor range consists of a lot of stuff that is discontinued and/or in limited supply.

He e, I found on the White Ensign Models website that their Colourcoats range covers French WW2 aircraft as well. I don't see an exact one-to-one correspondence (nor easy possibility to cross-reference) for all my needs, so I've emailed them and expect a reply soon. In any case I want to buy some Colourcoats so this is a boon.

Modelmaster does have French colours but I don't know how they match to the FS numbers cited. Interestingly, I still have some old Humbrol French colours and they do NOT match any of the Modelmaster, name for name.

Kits too. I was looking into the 'new' Aoshima 1/144th Dinah and discovered it is likely to be the latest boxing for the old Imai kit. That's the third different company to sell those Japanese twins.

You might check out Urban Fredriksson's color charts at IPMS Stockholm. Part 1:

He gives some Humbrol references. Note that the color Pegasus calls Khaki (30099) seems actually to have been called Brun Chocolat, and there's another Khaki, more like Olive Drab, used mainly through 1938.

Add to what I just posted:

Polly Scale (acrylics, distributed by Testors) has versions of all your colors besides the Brun Chocolat (30099). You can order them directly from Testors:

product nrs. 505236, -240 and -242

They've also got a PDF of color samples:

You'll note that their FS references are different, especially the grays, which are darker. This is apparently also true of the White Ensign paints. According to John Snyder (Mr. WEM), his paints are matched to an out-of-print French publication viewed by French modelers as the most accurate. I'm assuming Polly Scale used the same reference.

Thanks Pip, I'll check that out, since I haven't heard back from WEM strangely enough. The IPMS Stockholm site was not very useful, too many gaps even though for example Xtracolor exists they are not cross-referenced in the French color section. Also, I cannot get Humbrol easily either :-) Or model master... it seems each country has its problems with getting paints from non-national vendors! grrr....
