MATCHBOX KITS: LIST?

I'm looking to find a list of the original Matchbox kits. By original I mean before Revell bought them and started substiuting othgr kits for the orginals.

I'm on a bit of a tear with the senil guy. With my son getting interested I'd like to get some of the kits that I found so cool as a kid. I have a listing for Frog and I know where to get one for Airfix. Just need to figure out the Matchbox stuff.

Tom, your site helped but you list by aircraft type. And I'm pretty sure you're missing some of the Matchbox kits.

TIA Frank

ESM 72 (Encyclopedia of 1/72 Scale Models).

We publish a quarterly magazine covering the world of 1/72 scale models. There are 103 different 1/72 scale aircraft from Matchbox, not including the six diecast models from Matchbox Collectibles.

These were listed along with many box art photos in ESM 72 Vol.2,#1. This and all other back issues are available by the volume (four issues) for $25 in the US, $30 elsewhere. Binders are $5 US, $7 elsewhere.

BTW, we are mailing out Vol.7, #3 next week.

I've got a few Frog kits that I will never build. I'll see if I can dig them out. Rob Gronovius Modern US armor at

There was a list of the 1/76 armor posted on the AMPS web site -- I think it is still accessible.

It sounds like your quarterly Magazine is also counting the "Six" Die-cast Matchbox Collectibles airplanes that are not kits. But, the number six is no longer correct. By the end of this year there will be 24 models in the series, not counting the re-release of the first set for mass distribution;

-1st six -Available via mail order only

-Second release -Same as first release except 1/3 the price and are repackaged for Mass distribution in discount stores, etc.

-Third release: Recolours of the same World War II Fighter models from Release

1 and 2;

-Fourth Release: Six Planes, including some recolors and some new castings !

-Fifth Release: Some are out this year. Includes some recolors but als new castings, including Koren QWar Fighter Jets (Sabre and MIG 15, and Starfighter) and later this year some World War I Biplanes.

By the way, this is the best product that Matchbox is making now since the Model of Yesteryear range has been put on hold. The latest three releases all had "Matchbox" and "Dinky" on the base, since Matchbox owns the "Dinky" brand name.

Okay! Since no one has posted a list of Matchbox aircraft kits, I'll take a whack at it. This list was compiled from the 1988 Matchbox catalog, issues of Scale Modeler and Scale Models magazines, and various Matchbox kit boxes. It should be accurate through 1988.

And here we go...

At one time I had all but one each in the 400 and 600 ranges. I think there are more holes in the 00 series, though.

Whew! I think I have everything in 1/72 except for their Corsair II, F-14, and Prowler!
