"Johnny Cash hosted "Saturday Night Live", performed with the Boston Pops Orchestra, performed on "Solid Gold" where he was given a standing ovation - the only artist so honored in the history of the program, fished with Mick Jagger and entertained U.S. presidents. Products ranging from Lionel trains, Hohner harmonicas and Bulova watches to Sears and Standard Oil have been endorsed by Johnny."

Uh, it's possible -and even likely- for an individual to have more than one "passion".

Walter Cronkite, for instance, used to race sports cars back in the 1950s, but that didn't keep him from also enjoying sailing, his pipe, his wife, his kids, his job, and, yes, model railroading.

And who decided that some of these people are "famous"? I'll lay odds that half of them are unknown outside the US.

Uh, if one must be known in every corner of every small backwards nation; there's nobody on Earth who qualifies.

Which pretty much explains why Aussie "stars" invariably head for the US and the big bucks just as soon as they're able: they're searching for anonymity.

Riiiigggght.... and putting them on this list automatically makes them a model railroader... Can anyone show any evidence that Walter Cronkite is a model railroader?

Is there any evidence that YOU are?

FYI, during a Barbara Walters interview, Cronkite was sitting in front of his trains. But then, he wasn't actually running them.

Uh, you seriously think that people dedicate themselves to one hobby and one hobby only for their entire lifetimes? What an odd concept.

Let's see: I'm a motorcyclist, I've sky-dived, flown in hang-gliders, used to be a SCUBA instructor, built plastic aircraft and armor models, have designed, scratch-built, and flown many 1/4 scale radio-controlled airplanes, I'm an amature astronomer (Seen the comet yet? Look just left of Persius.), have my pilot's lisence, used to body surf, used to rock-climb, still day hike in the wilderness every chance I get (like earlier today), used to own my own darkroom back in the days of film cameras, raced sports and formula cars for years with some success, still run a mile or two almost every night, and, oh yes, I'm a model railroader too.

Straw man. Nobody but you said that.

I suppose you could ask Walter himself if it's going to keep you awake at nights. What's the big deal?

Many of those on the list are *only* known in corners of a backwards nation - yours.

US sportsmen and newsreaders don't, no matter how much you'd like to delude yourself that the rest of the world knows anything about baseball or daytime television. Or that they give a f*ck either way...

"Australian stars" is an oxymoron. Most of those that we claim as our own are nothing of the sort. An assortment of Poms, Septics and Kiwis who washed up here.

They're searching for a place that will reward their mediocrity and non-existant talent, so naturally they head for Hollywood.
