Oil

John Dungan's post set me thinking - I have several 5 gal drums of military oil split about equally between OC-600 a heavy compounded gear oil and OMD-40 a light (10W) detergent engine oil. I use the OMD-40 for general oil can work and occasionally as a flushing oil, but I have never found a use for the OC-600 (tried it in my lathe headstock once, but it caused so much drag from the leadscrew gear train on a cold day that the drive belt would just slip and screech!). Any ideas for a use for the OC-600 and would it be safe to run an engine on the OMD-40 for longer than just the ten minutes or so to flush the system?

Interesting that it mentions transmissions - my father once tried some in the gear box of a 1925 Delage and after no more than a few hundred yards it became very difficult to change gear. On popping the lid off (nice and easy as it sticks up through the floor boards) he was greeted by a 'box full to the brim with light brown foam! Drain, flush and refill with an expensive 'heritage' gear oil, presumably containing some sort of anti-foaming agent ;-(

which identifies a specific application as Humber FV1600 steering box and, judging by where I 'salvaged' it from, it was probably used somewhere on the FV436 as well!

Sadly I still can't see any use that I am likely to come across. Wonder if it's any good as steam cylinder oil - at least I could probably find a good home for it then.

Stick it in your swivel housings on your old Landrover and squirt some in the chassis to stop it rotting. Or flog it to the old tractor fraternity at the shows, it'll be alright in the back axle on the old Fordson Standards. :-)

I was thinking that the Field Marshall gearbox would like it. (SAE 140) I'd also be happy to use a mixture of your thick and thin stuff for the engine too. Because the engine is (eventually) a total loss system I tend to stick all sorts of odds and ends in the oil reservoir, the engine is not fussy at all.

It would also be good for a waste oil workshop heater!

I think steam cylinder oil is designed to emulsify with steam and maybe contains tallow, (not too sure) so I don't think you would have many takers on that one.
