Bit sad really as I've been associated with Nimrod for nearly 30 years - first on the MR2's Searchwater radar and more recently with sourcing obscure bearings for the MRA4. Has to be said that the latter was something of a pain since many appeared not to have been made since the Comet went out of production - BAe should never have gone into the vintage aircraft restoration business!

Whatever persuaded them to use such an outmoded airframE

BAe put in the most competitive tender based on using substantially reworked MR2 airframes and by the time it became clear this was unrealistic, the project was too far advanced to reconsider.

A real shame as the avionics package is first rate (especially the Searchwater 2000 radar - but I'm biased!). Had they put in a realistic bid utilising a modern 'off the shelf' airframe or down specced slightly to simply re-engine and re-life the MR2 frames, it would probably be doing sterling service by now.

Oh, and you'll like the bit about the new CAD-CAM made wings not fitting the original hand fettled fuselages!
