What is (was) it?

Pretty sure the base of this hot air engine on ebay was something else in a former life - looks like it says 'Britool' on it and the only thing I can think of that it vaguely resembles is a bottle jack. Any other ideas?

"Manf Under Licence from E Lake Ltd" ??

Lake & Elliott made bottle jacks, but it could also be Laval?

Lake & Elliott came from Ernest Lake & Co., later E Lake Ltd.

They were based in Bishops Stortford, which is where Lake & Eliott were situated in the 1970's.

Bottle jack beginnings indeed!

Ernest lake exhibited at the 1937 Air Show, see this archive:

Ah, Lake not Lark. looks like a rather expensive collection of unrelated parts then - must admit I lost interest at about 25 quid!

Could it be the remains of a Ky-Ko set into a bottle jack body as a flame container? see

I used to have a pair of big 'Britool' screw jacks, might still have them somewhere, not that style but a confirmation that they were involved in selling (rebadging?) that sort of thing at one time.

The only bits that looks as if they could perhaps have had anything to do with Ky-Ko are the 'A' frames - and even those lack the housings at the top to take the ball bearings that manufacturer used. I think if any of the engine came from a commercial source at all, then it could have been one of the casting suppliers for the ET Westbury Heinrici model:-

most of it appears to consist of very much 'parts of the moment', to pinch Charles Hudson's fine phrase originally used to describe the constuction of many small power IC engines.
