Hornby Steam Profile Models

Where might I find technical data for Hornby models from 1990 to present day. I am particularely interested in the change ( if any ) from tender to loco drive.

You'll get very basic information from "Ramsey's Guide" edited by Pat Hammond. This (regularly updated volume) lists output from most of the major British manufacturers, and does tend to differentiate between loco & tender drive models. It is basically a price guide for dealers & collectors, although in many respects the eBay market has severely impacted on the values quoted (both up and down) as previously difficult to find items are now often pulled kicking & screaming from the attic by eBayers.

Looking at the service sheets may give some clues. There are both tender drive and new loco drive ones there, but not of the same prototype.

I was going to suggest that too Simon, but the service sheets don't really indicate when & if the change(s) took place. They won't necessarily help with such anomolies as the LNER A3 continuing to appear in both loco and tender drive versions, and that some tender drive locos (the original tender drive Black 5 for instance) are now appearing in the Thomas the Tank Engine range.

Thanks for that link, goodness why I could not find it myself. It is probably that I still pull up the old site being too lazy to correct it.

By the way if you were thinking this info would be usefull to convert tender to loco drive then i suspect it wont help as most loco drive models are from totally new tooling.

Have there actually been any conversions to loco drive using existing tooling? The only one I can think of which *might* qualify is the GWR 'King' which although slightly uprated was hardly new tooling, even though Hornby tried charging at the same general price level as the newly tooled models.

My primary interest is to identify models which come onto the market and then determine if spares are available -- all too often I have bought real crap and just cannot bring myself to sell it on without repair. Sometimes eBayers can out lie politicians and car salesmen!

There is plenty of data up to 1990 but I could locate very little thereafter.
