Lincoln SA200 problem

My father-in-law has a Lincoln SA200 DC welder - these are the ones like an upside down washing tub with a round pole sticking out the top and a mondo 3ph 440v electric motor under the washing tub driving the generator (the pole). It is 1 of 2 that I bought - I kept the SA150J and he took the 200. Both were running when I got them, and mine is still fine. His one got parked up for a couple of years and when he went to use it, he couldn't get it to arc. Just got a small spark out of it as the rod touched - almost like really low arc voltage. The voltage is adjustable on these, but playing with that knob did nothing. Tried different leads and handpiece. Anyone got any suggestions? Geoff

Does it have brushes? They could have stuck and are not pressing hard enough against the armature.

Hello John L, I would like to clarify this procedure if I may.

Was AC input power applied to the bad welder when it was placed in parrallel with the good welder? I am asking if the bad welding machine was rotating also?

Two AC supply power points would be needed to do this, is that correct?

I bought two similar machines very cheaply and they have been idle for a long time as I do not have three phase power yet. I may have to do this procedure in the future and I want to get it right.

Thanks for that tip,

Regards, John Crighton

Did you finish the generator conversion with yours?
