OT: Getting Spam mail that fills my box

I am not sure if any of you are having this problem. In two of my email accounts, I am getting the same spam from some company claiming to M$ and that there is a security patch that I need to load. I know that it is not the case, but there is no where to opt out from recieving this in the future. I am over the limit of being able to block addresses, any suggestions on this. One account is in hotmail, the other is in yahoo. And we are not talking about days here, this, in some cases, happens in a matter of hours.

Is this some ploy to make me up grade to a better account. ARGH!!!!!!!!

You would be sure if you read the very large current thread in this newsgroup. That thread is:

BTW, If you know of away to get anyone at Yahoo to pay attention to what the problem is let me know because my old Yahoo account is now filled to it's 8 meg limit in 30 minutes or less.

IOW it's worthless.

It isn't spam. There are several worms around right now that try to make it look like you are getting mail from MicroSoft. They will usually contain an attachement that is dangerous in that it can exploit weaknesses in MicroSoft's OS.

I was getting the same thing every time I checked my mail. Found out it is a worm that begins with W32/swen. Don't want to use the whole url of the worm. McAfee & Norton have a free tool to remove it. I did it yesterday. I was getting the messages about not being able to send e-mail because it contained a virus. Also a fake M$ screen telling me to get their security update. Hope this helps. Rudy

It is a new virus/worm thats making its rounds. I had 845 emails in my outlook account over the weekend, 145 yesterday, 345 last night. As you say, a lot of them list MS or something else as the sender to entice you to open it. Our company virus scan does identify it as a virus and strips the info from the message. Be aware - it's not only "MS" listed in the "sender" heading. Some have other innocuous-sounding names and others are totally "off-the-wall". Our IS dept tells me I'm on someone's mail list that has the virus and they don't know it yet. Good Luck!!

My problem is that by the time my spam filter and mail filters sort through all the crap, I immediately have 20 more waiting to be gone through again.

Been counting how many times I have gotten this virus in the mail and I am way over 1000 now.

I'm having the same problem. Someone is flooding my mail box with messages that are loaded with a particular virus. Luckily, my anti-virus is up to date and alerted me of the problem.

I have contacted my service provider and they have told me it is coming from one source. Hopefully, they will be able to locate the idiot!

Hmmm...the OP said it's happening to his Yahoo mail and Hotmail accounts. Outlook really doesn't enter the picture here unless he's using it to access his webmail (possible but not very common).

I have been getting my Hotmail account flodded recently and not just with the MS emails either. Watch out for this type of email with a *.bat attachment

Hi. I'm afraid the message returned below could not be delivered to the following addresses:

Undeliverable to snipped-for-privacy@SPAMSUCKS.net

I changed the email address but it looks legit when you see it in your box. Anyhow, the email is always different never the same. I'm getting 5-10 a day and the number keeps increasing. I can't stop this type of email either. I just keep deleteing them.

Correction its not always a *.bat file it also comes in *.exe files as well. There is no logic that I can see other than to pass out worms or virus.

It also comes as a "wav" file that will automatically open up a window waiting for you to save it. I got 217 within an hour....gettin tired of cleaning, virus scanning, and deleting :) JAKE BARRON

Joel Moore quipped:

perhaps, but

1) when you hear about a virus or worm that "sends itself to everyone in your addressbook," they're referring solely to outlook/express. use Thunderbird, and it won't spread from you, even if you stupidly run the attachment.

2) Every other email client that i've seen refuses to run attachments. You must first save to disk then run it. It's one additional layer of protection.

so, yes, avoid outlook/express and you'll reduce the spread of most email worms/virii.

and btw, if his yahoo/hotmail accounts are filling up it's because those addresses are in someone's outlook addressbook who is infected.

just like I had my home inbox filled up by blaster, (and numerous other virii/worms) etc email, and I run linux exclusively.

Certainly the way I now see this problem.

Thanks to Microsoft Outlook it does not matter if you don't have the virus / worm on your machine. If your using something like Yahoo's free e-mail and your e-mail box is targeted, at this point, you can forget about ever using that Yahoo e-mail address again.

But it's 100% Windows Native so that's a good thing.

And, as usual, you are wrong again.

I think that either they are in error or you misunderstood. This one is coming from many ISPs all over the world.
