IBOC - are they mad?

Brian from Harris just explained that there is a 7 second delay on both the digital and analog portions of an IBOC transmitter.

are they trying to totally destroy live radio?

i meant to e-mail this to someone, however i "misfired" and posted it instead. fortunately it is vaguely on topic for this group. the 7 second delay for IBOC (in band on channel) digital radio is the time it takes to convert to the digital broadcast format. this will eliminate a live announcer from monitoring himself "on air" instead must listen in "program" therefore limiting the ability to mix the audio while hearing the on air processing.

this is also the case when profanity delays are employed.

the way IBOC works is that 2 transmitters are operating at the same time on the same radio channel from the same tower. when a "digital" listener is in a low signal area such as the "fringe" of the coverage for a particular station the receiver reverts to analog. this means the analog portion must be deliberately delayed so that is will be in sync with the digital signal.

the delay is a moot point on network, taped, or voice tracked (automated) shows. (profanity delays are moot on these type of shows too. there is no one there to push the button).

i am not sure if your comment was tongue in cheek or not but i would have to disagree with the general sentiment. broadcast delays are used to bleep dirty words not control political commentary.

there is plenty of censorship of (US) radio and TV in the form of federal and state laws. for example in Ohio it is illegal to advertise fee alcohol and in California it is illegal to advertise gambling (casinos). for the federal rules and regulations you have to wade through part 73 here
