drawing platinum wire

Mar 18, 2009 0 Replies

Hi!

Can anyone explain, why the cost of production of platinum wire are so high? 250 USD for 10m 0.127mm (AWG 36) diameter, 365 USD for 100m (value of platunim metal not included). That is vastly more than e.g. the cost of production of steel wire.

Are there any difficulties with drawing platinum wire, or is this just because of small scale production. Platinum wire is made on a big scale for use with catalytic gauzes, but probably small scale compared to steel.

Thanks, Bernhard
