Mars should join the Kyoto protocol

Simultaneous warming on Earth and Mars suggests that our planet's recent climate changes have a naturaland not a human- inducedcause, according to one scientist's controversial theory.

Earth is currently experiencing rapid warming, which the vast majority of climate scientists says is due to humans pumping huge amounts of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. (Get an overview: "Global Warming Fast Facts".)

Mars, too, appears to be enjoying more mild and balmy temperatures.

In 2005 data from NASA's Mars Global Surveyor and Odyssey missions revealed that the carbon dioxide "ice caps" near Mars's south pole had been diminishing for three summers in a row.

Habibullo Abdussamatov, head of the St. Petersburg's Pulkovo Astronomical Observatory in Russia, says the Mars data is evidence that the current global warming on Earth is being caused by changes in the sun.

"The long-term increase in solar irradiance is heating both Earth and Mars," he said.

Solar Cycles

Abdussamatov believes that changes in the sun's heat output can account for almost all the climate changes we see on both planets.

Mars and Earth, for instance, have experienced periodic ice ages throughout their histories.

"Man-made greenhouse warming has made a small contribution to the warming seen on Earth in recent years, but it cannot compete with the increase in solar irradiance," Abdussamatov said.

By studying fluctuations in the warmth of the sun, Abdussamatov believes he can see a pattern that fits with the ups and downs in climate we see on Earth and Mars.

Abdussamatov's work, however, has not been well received by other climate scientists.

Apparantly the martians need an Al Gore too.

... we need an observatory there. I suggest sending you there. You'll get your own use-net and can post whatever crap comes to your mind! No feed to mother-planet earth, of corse!

A tiny bit of perspective: Take two bottles of soda water, put one in the fridge for a few hours. Open the both. Did you notice how much more CO2 stays dissolved in the cold one? Imagine the amount of CO2 dissolved in the oceans. (yes, the temp swing is bigger but the oceans are bigger than a soda bottle. The higher CO2 in the atmosphere could be due to the warming rather than the other way around. But, there's no money in that and a LOT in the other.

In the spirit of interstelar cooperation, I say we send him to them. I'll plant a few more trees to provide for the carbon offset needed for the space ship.

Have you heard of the eleven year solar cycle?

The last solar max was in 2000-2001, we are now near solar minimum. It is over that same period that Martian warming was observed.

The studies I have found put an upper limit of about

+0.1 W/sqm on any change in the solar constant over the last 30 years which is calculated to have at most, one quarter of the effect of the increased CO2 over the same period.

Do you suppose your hypothesis is testable?

What is the isotopic distribution of carbon dioxide dissolved in ocean water? What is it in the air? What is it in fossil fuels? Has and if so, how has it been changing in each?

The oceans are dissolving CO2 from the atmosphere, not releasing it. This is lowering the pH of the oceans, threatening corals and other organisms with calcium carbonate shells and skeletons.

Ned points to a NASA page that shows the increased absorption of CO2. I don't know all the specifics of the whole interactions and how equilibrium is reached at different concentrations and temperatures. I just pointed out that cooler water will hold more CO2 in solution. Both of my soda bottles have the same molarities. Do you think ALL there is to know about it is known?

Old fashioned pollution is a bigger threat to us than CO2. The naturalists I have spoken to on Canadian lakes have explained the damage from acid rain that had killed lakes is from the sulfur in coal burned thousands of miles away. Oddly enough, sulfur compounds in the atmosphere reflect solar energy and help counteract GW.

On Mon, 5 Mar 2007 16:30:44 GMT, with neither quill nor qualm, "Jim Toomb" quickly quoth:

Of course not. How would the scientists get their funding if it weren't for GAK?

Crikey, they can have OURS!

Did you see the newest news on Algore's utility bills? Our GAK mentor is using more and more electrical power and gas at his KY mansion. Y'know, "more" to the tune of $30,000 a year! How's that for your standard hypocrisy from the Left?

And while we're on politics, here's a not-so-far-off joke on Billary:

Hillary Clinton goes to a primary school in Ithaca, New York to talk about the world. After her talk she offers question time. One little boy puts up his hand, and the Senator asks him what his name is.

"Kenneth," came the reply.

"And what is your question, Kenneth?"

"I have three questions, Ma-am:

First - whatever happened to your medical health care plan? Second - why would you run for Preside! nt after your husband shamed the office? And third - whatever happened to all those things you took when you left the White House?"

..Just then the bell rings for recess. Hillary Clinton informs the kiddies that they will continue after recess.

When they resume Hillary says, "Okay where were we? Oh, that's right, question time. Who has a question?" This time a different little boy puts his hand up; Hillary points him out and asks him what his name is.

"Larry," he said.

"And what is your question?"

"I have five questions: First - whatever happened to your medical health care plan? Second - why would you run for President after your husband shamed the office? Third - whatever happened to all those things you took when you left the White House? Fourth - why did the recess bell go off 20 minutes early? And fifth - what happened to Kenneth?"

Next thing they will blame the warming up of Mars on the Mars rover that we sent there giving off co2.

Don't be silly. This is obviously Bush's fault. That's how far-reaching and insidious he is, you see. He's simultaneously hopelessly stupid, _and_, he's the most influential, scheming person in existance. He is so evul, he can even affect weather on other planets. Don't you SEE, MAN!!!!eleven!!!!11!!?
