Video Borescope

Has anyone tried the Visual Optics video borescope?

'm looking for a low cost ~$200-300 Borescope that will fit through a

14mm spark plug or O2 sensor hole, and also gearbox drain ports etc. The Ridgid SeeSnake was a possibility, (for about the same price), but it's .7" diameter is a bit too large. Also the lower cost fiber scopes are a possibility, but in this price range the highest fiber count I saw was 7000 fibers, which on the face of it seems lower than the pixtel count on the Visual Optics, plus they are typically only 18" long vs. 36" for the VO. Also the VO has a built in color screen plus video out jack.

I bought one years ago from a medical equipment manufacturer in Florida. It was designed to determine the sex of parrots. The probe is 3mm in diameter and 10 inches long. It also came with a video camera you attach to the probe. I paid $2500 at the SEMA show in Las Vegas and got a great deal. I find your prices hard to believe. By the way, you need an internal 90 degree mirror. There will not be enough room to bend a flexible probe to be totally useful. Steve

So how much is the voscope? I didn't see a price on their website. Harbor Freight now has a video borescope, 8 mm (.315") diameter, 48" long, with 0 and 90 degree tips, for $300.

Haven't seen it in person yet, but next time I get to a store I was going to see if I could play with one. 4 AA batteries or wall wart for power, 3 LEDs for light, 2.5" color screen but no resolution specs, and video out so you can go to a TV or recorder.

More than likely 320x240, or QVGA as it's called. These screens are all over the place in media players. They can actually look pretty good, especially in a 2 to 3 inch size.

If you can live with a slightly bigger hole, you can dig around get a media player (try the JXD661) with video input and a small camera for about $120 total; make you own mountings and scope away.

Several online stores have the VOscope for around 225-260 bucks. It comes with a mirror kit. It's not a fiberscope, but a small diam camera on a flex stalk, so resoulution seems limited by the CCD's pixtel count rather than the the number of fibers as would I guess be the case with a fiberscope. I think I'll have a look at the Harbor Freight unit to see how it works, but for now at $300, it's more than the VO scope, which is assembled in the USA. The HF seems to have a diameter advantage, 0.315" vs 0.40" for the VOscope.

Rigid makes one too... Grainger had it on display for $250.00 It had a bigger head and plans are on the deck for one to pass through a plug hole with a mirror that goes in and articulates independent of the scope arm. Very cool. I'm going to buy one as soon as they come out. The medical grade ones are way out of my price range.
