Wooohoo! (welder)

So eating breakfast this morning I opened the paper and casually started digging for the comics section... I passed the classefieds on the way, and thinking the comics were a bit hidden today I took a peek. Turned the page, and there it was: 230A CENTURY welder, $150, top left corner. After a call and a trip I got it for but $100... generous man!

Not the best (since the words "Lincoln" or "Miller" are nowhere to be found), but the 230A should make up for that. Has high and low, but I didn't see a DC setting. Continuously variable amperage, etc.

Will have to install a 240V 50A circuit now...

Good going, that's a decent deal. Not much to go wrong with the AC-only stick welders. You've actually gone one better than I, since in all the amazing deals I've found on machinery there hasn't been a basic welder.

I checked out the seller's other auctions and noticed that you could also buy a paintball gun with the same cool housing. Aint it amazing, the advances made in packaging these days :)

I wonder if one of his other auction winners is singing into a stinger. Feelings, nothing more than feelings...

Hmmm, it redirects me to some Mediaplex thing (that's blocked by my Spybot settings). Had to stop it before redirecting to get this:

you trim the crud (everything but dll?ViewItem?item=...) it'll fit on a single 77 character line without wrapping.

Anyway... now THAT is funny! :o

I've got a few thoughts which you may find useful:

First, if you can afford it, get one of the $50 HF autodarkening hoods. Makes a big difference being able to start your weld without having to take your eyes off where you are to flip down the helmet.

Second, you can brace the loose end of the rod with your other gloved hand while that hand is resting on or near the work, so you're not trying to start by waving a foot long rod and can focus more on trying to strike an arc. If you stop and restart, you sometimes have to tap the end against the ground to break the end of the flux off.

Third, I find I really like running 7014 and 7018AC rods more than the 60xx, mostly because I've yet to learn to run them well. Most hardware stores around here sell Forney brand which is quite servicable, if getting to a real welding supply is a problem. Any good farm or tractor supply should also have a good selection if you are blessed to have one nearby. If you shop around, you can sometimes find 1/16" rod which can be fun for smaller welds.

Fourth, a good ground is everything, and the closer it is to where you are welding, the better, not merely the part of the assembly closest to the welder.

Lastly, I've not needed to use rod over 1/8" yet, so a

30A dryer circuit has worked just fine...
