i was axoius to weld, but....
less welding, better/safer/more-to-code job.
two tanks side by side. fill tube goes to 2nd, vent tube on 1st. fill tube has T in it closer to 2nd tank. 2nd tank cross connects via two 2" pipes using extra the oem threaded holes in top of each tank.
during fill, the 2nd tank will get most of the oil, venting air back into the 1st. when 2nd is full, fill oil will use T to fill 1st.

Sure that would work, with the 4" hole close to the bottom and the smaller hole up on top. It would save some cutting and would create a baffle in the center for added strength, if that is your concern. Also grind down any high spots (welds,etc.) so the two tanks fit as tightly as they possibly can.

Why do you feel so compelled to make it hard to replace one tank or the other if they ever fail? Are you extremely limited in space? What if you just had two filler pipes and two teed together outlet pipes? Will a homemade 550 gallon behemoth be filled by the oil company? Will your fire insurance accept it? What if a tank leaks and there's a fire, will the insurance co. pay? If you ever try to sell this building, will it pass the next guy's insurance company? Keep it simple. Why borrow trouble? Just because you can weld, you don't need to use it on this project.
