Tested my Cyber Tig a little more

I followed Wayne's suggestion and found a way to fully test this welder programmable cycle. I shorted the leads. The program worked. Interestingly, at first, at high amperages, the contactor would drop out intermittently. After I swapped wires so that the contactor is wired on utility power, that stopped and I could ramp output up all the way to 190 amps. DC voltage was obviously very low due to the intentional short condition. So, big thanks goes to Wayne.

You're welcome.

That was the only way I ever managed to fully test all the functions on my machine. It's hard to tell what's going one when welding. I found the test procedures in the manual I finally managed to get for mine. There should be a method of adjusting the main current using this test method though I'm sure your welder will be different from mine.

For my machine, adjusting current while welding amounts to simply changing the numbers on the dial. It changes current instantly. I am quite awed by this welding machine, in fact.

I begin to suspect that I can run it off my existing phase converter, at high amperages it would result in a slightly distorted DC due to sagging of the wild leg, but that may not be a big deal. All I have to make sure is that the wild leg is NOT the one powering the control circuit and the HF circuit. I already wired it that way, last night.

It's a good machine alright. But I was talking about adjusting it so the numbers on the dial read the correct amperage which is a improvement over my machine. Mine has a ten turn dial on it but the numbers don't have anything to do with the amperage coming out. But mine has a adjustment so that max on the dial (100) is the proper max for the machine (which is 350 IIRC).

Likely though at max amperage you might be pushing the transformer and converter a little hard. Some amperage and voltage readings on the converter leg would be helpful to figure this out. You already know it's dropping since the contactor was dropping out.

Oh, I see. For my machine, I get out exactly what I set it on the digital potentiometer. It's very nice and leaves no room for guesswork.

Yes. I will do it the right way.
