OS crankcase damage

My 46 FX crankcase got damaged - the carb was forced backwards when a soft patch of earth unexpectedly occupied a spot in mid-air. The carb is still OK but the hole for it in the crankcase got deformed.

Other than getting a new crankcase/ engine what other options do I have?

TIA

I don't know if it would work for you, but I fitted a carburettor to a PAW, which originally had an ordinary venturi, by opening up the intake so that the carburettor would go in and then sealed it in place with an epoxy putty. Milliput might be suitable, or even perhaps a silicone sealant.

Try it - you've nothing to lose.

Hello, Pete.

You might be able to silver solder it. What have you got to loose?

If you thoroughly clean and prep the case, a good application of "J-B Weld" (It's a machineable steel epoxy available at most all hardware stores) should do the job. I'd put a light glob on first, then add a second one, forming it to shape. If you get some where you don't want, you can file/grind it off later.

I've been flying a TT .36 on a Gremlin for several years now with the carb J-B-Welded in.

As someone said about the silver solder, you've got nothing to lose. Worst case, you have to buy a new crankcase and end up with some experience about what doesn't work for you.

I doubt that silver solder would work on an aluminum crankcase. If yours is steel, then it might work. JB Weld is the best bet.

No, thats not the worst case. Worst case is you screw up th carb , then you will have to replace BOTH the carb and the crankcase.

...or you could just invest $130 in a new OS .46AX, which is overall as good if not better than the FX, and call it a day.

Hello, Bruce.

I realized this after I made the post, and I will add my vote to the JB weld suggestion.

Great news, guys. I just found out that the American Aluminum Association will sell us a seventy-two page book on how to solder aluminum for only seventy dollars. Sounds like a great deal to me. What do you say?

Yea, buy a new engine instead of a crankcase!

Sounds great! Buy it, scan it, and post the pdf files for the rest of us. Appreciate it!

JB Weld will hold it. How do I know that ? :-( I'm still flying an OS .25 that I screwed into the ground and broke off the carb.
