How to test a single phase ac motor??

Could someone please tell me how i go about testing a single phase ac motor with external capacitors by using a mega or a multi meter. The motor is being used for a swimming pool pump and i want to check if its faulty.

Why are you testing it? What makes you think it might not work? Is there some reason you can't simply run it and see?
