Try variac.com

General Radio was the original owner of the trade name, but apparently a competitor now owns it. A competitor is superiorelectric.com

Claude Lyons make variable transformers ("variacs") under the trade names "Regavolt" and "Varatran".

Have a look at our website

and particularly at the variable transformers page. There you can download a technical note, the URL of which is

and which includes a connection diagram.

The arrangement you want is called "over-voltage connection". The terminal numbering on your unit may be different but the principle is the same namely the bottom of the coil is connected to both input neutral and output neutral. The input live goes to the tapping (connection point) next down from the top of the coil. The output live is taken from the brush (moving contact).

If you set your newsreader to use a fixed-pitch font (e.g. Courier) the following diagram should make the connections clear: ) ___________) 220 ) ) )

The hostname "claudelyons.co.uk" has no IP address. You should add that to your DNS server. In the mean time, the URL:

to work OK.
