High-speed motor/gear/pulley combo

I am looking for an inexpensive high-speed breadboard-size motor or motor/gear/pulley combination for hobby/experimental use, and any input or papers on what kind of speeds have been attained with them. Low torque output is not a problem; perhaps some kind of transmission to overcome inertia. Any ideas? Dental drill-type setups? High-speed hobby tool motors?

Hi Bob:

What kind of rpm are you looking for? What is your duty cycle?

If you are not operating continuously (100% duty cycle) most DC motors can handle over current/voltage for short periods. For example, if you operate a 12V motor at 18V or 24V, it will turn much faster, but you can't do it for extended periods of time or you'll overheat the windings. It needs time to cool in between these spurts.

Most dentists' drills are pneumatic, not electric. Pneumatic motors can attain very high speeds.

Here is a small, cheap DC motor that is rated at over 26,000 rpm; go to

and look up their part no. 232101CA

Hope this helps.
