OT shiming a router table to act as a jointer...

x-no-archive:yes

I have read that it may be possible to edge joint wood turnign your router table into a jointer of sorts by shimming the outfeed side of the fence 1/32 or 1/64 of an inch or so. Then leveling the straight cut

bit with his side of the fence, therefore leaving a 1/32 or 1/64 "gap" from the blade to the infeed fence.

I am just getting into woodworking. WOuld this work? What could i find at my local harware storwe that would allow me this 1/32 - 1/64 gap?

The overall answer is "it depends". If you use a good router and a good router table with a good fence, you might have some luck with this. I would use at least a 1/2 inch bit. The 1/4 inch bits are not going to be stiff enough. As for the 1/32 or 1/64 gap, you might be able to get some formica or similar material that would do the trick. If you absolutely got really stuck on this, then some paper card stock would do pretty well.

Is it possible to have an attachment on a Table Saw so that a table saw can be used as a a saw and router table? I'm thinking of a hole on the opposite side of the fence through which the router bit is protruding through and an attachment underneath and then the fence can be used as the router guide Seems to me that this wouldn't be a very complicated setup?

Try the Ryobi B3100 table saw. It has it already.
