Scratch resistant panel finishing

I seem to remember that either door hardware or faucets sometimes are coated in some vacuum vapor deposit method to leave a very durable scratch resistant finish. I think that this technology may be of interest to me to finish publicly used push button panels.

I am hoping that this description is enough to get the right search terms (or alternate ideas and some good links)

Thank you in advanced

Google: metal "scratch resistant coating" -optical -lens -glasses

... gets it down to "only" 14,000 hits. You could try and add the specific metal you want to treat as substrate, and keep in mind that Google only considers 10 words in its search criterion.
