Based on half-vast experience in ejecting small quantities of paper from stout steel cylinders, we have found that black powder is definitely louder than smokeless. Also, black powder will push an oil drum up pretty good, too.

A while back I made a CO2 cannon which I use to shoot slugs with strings attached over limbs of trees. It does it much more accurately and farther than I can throw.

Anyway a few minutes ago a deer was back in the yard and I wanted to move it along before it ate any more of my wifes lillys. Thought the CO2 cannon's noise would do that. Tried it without anything in the barrel and I too was greatly disappointed in how loud it was. Must remember to save some corks from wine bottles to increase the noise.

Maybe your friend needs to bore it out to fit wine corks.

Right now there are no sights on the cannon. I just sight down the barrel, well actually the pipe that surrounds the barrel. The barrel is made of pvc pipe and I am afraid it might shatter sometime. I could add sights, but the " trigger " is the valve on a CO2 fire extingusher tank that I thump with my fist. So there is some vibration from " squeezing " the trigger and the amount of gas released is not all that well controled. Works well enough that I probably can hit a five foot square target at 50 yards, but to " then aim properly " would take a lot of refinement. Right now it works well enough for its intended use.

Increasing the bore volume will make it quieter not louder when using a bullet.

Smokeless gunpowder is a propellant that burns, not an explosive. What makes a bang is the pressure behind the bullet when it is uncorked.

If you are shooting blanks, smokeless powder has problems making noise. Black powder is an explosive, but it rots the bore if not cleaned, and who want an explosive around?

I have make big bangs out of rifles with no bullet and smokeless powder when forming cases. I put 10 grains [.0015 pounds] of powder over the primer and then 30 grains of Cream of Wheat cereal over that. That is loud fired straight up, but can fall out if the barrel is tipped. I put some Ivory soap over the Cream of Wheat to keep it in place.

As calculate on rec.crafts.metalworking for me, the threshold of guns being loud is when the escapement gas is at least one atmosphere above ambient.

Blanks actually use a powder that is right at the threshold of being explosives. Smokeless blanks, not black powder blanks.

If you ever pull the powder from military blanks...treat it as an explosive.
