Metalworking lathe problem

My husband just got 12"X36" metalworking lathe, Central Machinery #33274. The handbook is not that great and he cannot locate the drain for the headstock and feedbox oil containers. Also what would be equivalent to Mobil DTE oil for the headstock and Mobil Vactra oil?

Ignorant wife.

Mobil DTE comes in several grades or weights. Is it DTE light, medium, heavy, etc? Same with the Vactra. It is likely Vactra number 2 but it does have to be right. If you can post that info, it can be cross referenced.

According to D Murphy :

And both can be ordered through suppliers like MSC (which he will *love* the 4000+ page catalog from). They supply tons of accessories for the machine tools, as well as the necessary lubricants.

These are still in production. Don't bother trying to figure out substitutes for these oils, just get the right kind. With an antique machine tool, the specified lubricants may no longer be made -- but the various lube makers (like Mobil) can tell you which of their lubes are the closest equivalents even in those cases.

Enjoy, DoN.

Celia -

Mobil oil are valid and is sold every day. I have a gallon of Mobil Vactra in my shop - it is "way" oil - it is sticky so it won't flow off so the lube stays there. Something between thick molasses and oil in nature.

is where I bought my Vactra. If you have a Mobil oil dealer (not a gas station - but maybe they could help) - a wholesale dealer - he sells oil to gas stations....

They likely can get some of each for you. I suspect the DTE is Mobil oil and is sold everywhere.

I don't know this machine, but on many of my gearboxes, etc. I just remove the lowest bolt holding things together. The bolt should go right into the case and leave an openning when removed. If not, try another.

Man, what a lucky guy. This fellow has a wife that helps with the metalworking.

Anyone know if Mobil Vactra Extra Heavy is still available in the UK? I called a few suppliers but could only find equivalents. It's the recommended lubricant for the slide on my power hacksaw.
