Trick to starting threads straight

Is there a trick to getting threads perfectly straight by hand? Ithreaded some aluminum rod and the threads turned out fine but hadtrouble with them not being perfectly straight. I am a nebie at this.Any tricks? It is a 3/8 -24 die and I was using a 1 inch socket andwratchet.
