Choice of plastic for milling & threading ..

Hi All

I have to make a holder for a prototype piece of kit, my choice of material is a plastic as it needs to be RF transparent. I need to be able to turn, mill, bore & thread it without great difficulty. The material properties needs good UV resistance as the item will be used outside, being located in Australia makes cold temperatures less of an issue.

Will probably have to souce from RS or similiar.

Any suggestions as to a material ? Nylon - Tufnol etc ??

Thanks for any input.

Paul

PS - blank will be a large diameter rod, around 100 mm dia.

I use Delrin, readily available from plastics outlets in Brisbane. Easy to saw, drill, tap, bore & turn. I've bought it in both black & white.

RS are way too expensive for most things, I find.

The easiest to work with is POM (most know brand name: Delrin).

I don't think that the Australians think POM's are easiest to work with

Maybe - but I suspect they would enjoy cutting threads on some

That is'nt beer, that's second hand stuff that's been through someone's kidneys and only fit for export, the locals don't drink that rubbish ...

So, looks like Delrin is the stuff to use. Thanks to all who replied.

Not sure whereabouts you are Paul, but if in Brisbane, try Foremost Plastics in Bulimba. If it's not in stock they can get it quick, and have offcuts available too.
