I do hope you did not think I was being in any way critical of the group. With one notable (notorious?) exception I always enjoy reading the contributions and the banter that goes with them. Your Britannia is probably nearer to completion than my Stuart Turner Model steam engine started over 40 years ago.

What caught my eye was the title of this thread and I just wondered how it was that "uk.rec.models.engineering" attracted so few contributors from the model engineering fraternity.

From my own point of view discussion about things such as what others do when a drill breaks off short in a stud one is trying to drill out and extract etc is what I want to hear about.

I started the Britannia in 1977 when I bought the Littlejohn lathe (that we still have) Norman Spink supplied the castings that we have used so far, and James Perrier (by memory, might be wrong) are the drawings, 22 sheets IIRC.

Possibly because:

Modellers generally tend to be pretty much divided into specialist groups, like Radio Controlled aircraft, cars and so on.

'Engineers', and I use the term loosely, gravitate towards anything that is mechanically interesting, be it a model or a lathe or a beer pump (sorry, water pump!) etc, so their interest is much wider and takes in a whole range of subjects as you may have noticed.

Yup, so do we all.

Hello lads and lasses, not trying to harrass you, but, i'm on Telus broadband here in British Columbia. I pay Can. 35 dollars a month for this on top of my phone line (that'sr 20 bucks) and get up to 5 email addresses, 80K+ newsgroups of which I subscribe to: the (infamous) rec.crafts.metalworking, uk.rec.models.engineering, sci.eng.joining.welding, uk.rec.engines.stationary, and uk.rec.models.rail, (mainly 'cos I'm originally from Northumberland and like to keep up), plus, of course, access to the internet, in my case via Mozilla. And no, I don't live in Vancouver; actually 600 miles north in a village of 2000 pop. in the heart of the Lakes District of BC i.e. right in the rhubarb, boonies, outback, countryside, whatever you like to call it. The speed is good enough for us to audio/video conference with our daughter without too much delay (about 2 seconds estimated) on the audio. Sorry, but I think you guys are being shafted!!

I use them as well and can't fault them. Other services I have used which I would recomend are easynews.com, newsdemon.com and usenetserver.com. None of them are dirt cheap, but the quality of the service is second to none, much better than any ISP (apart from those that out source to Giga!)

Depends on more then NG retention stats ...

I must say, the total absence of "Angry of Chippenham" in recent weeks is contributing greatly to the general peace and quiet in this NG.

I've been away for a few days (short break in the North of Ireland, really lucky with the weather), had failed to pay for the Berlin newsfeed & it was dead when I got back tonight, so I will give Onetel's server one more try. It was utter cr*p when I first started with them a couple of years ago, then goteven worse, then improved quite a bit but nowhere near as good as the Berlin setup. I'll see how it goes for a few days, but if it's no good I'll be paying up for the Berlin feed.
