Re: Effect of Diminishing Magnetic Field On GPS

I find it difficult to believe something of this magnitude will not have some major impacts on the surface. Even thought this has occurred many times, not much has been done what impact magnetic shifts have had on life on the surface. A lessening magnetic field does cause a degradation in the ozone. Something Sierra Club crazies and save the snail darter seem to not mention in debates about global warming. During the no magnetic field period which will last over a 10,000 years some of the earth's atmosphere is going to be stripped away. Genetic mutations will be greatly increased. Impact on weather, Teutonic plate movements, volcanic activity seems to be a big unknown. Humanity will survive, but not necessarily civilization. Ad to the above, an overdue ice age that it is going to be a very interesting time for future generations. I suspect, if they will be dumbfounded at our concern over SUVs, hair spray and oil spills if the impacts of the above events are major.

I'm not too concerned about the movements of German dinnerware. ;)

Haven't you heard? The treehuggers are all geared up to blame ANY change in the weather on "global warming", including an ice age. And of course, by their way of thinking, change is a Bad Thing. They seem to believe that the environment and climate are supposed to be in a perpetual static state.

Do you know the actual percentage of change of sunlight hitting the earth over the past 100 years? Dig up the numbers and you will be disappointed.

Secondly, your statement ignores the atmospheric models that have been developed and support (in widely varying ammounts) the effect of greenhouse gases on global warming.

So, you're comparing the religious-rights from the Salem witch trials with the modern day lefts? Anyone else see a contradiction there?

I have an idea... why don't you take the atmospheric models that have been developed and hold them underwater. If they float, then they're false!

No, the sky is not falling.

"And they would certainly not threaten life on Earth as they do in science fiction."

Wrong:

"As for the ozone layer...the effects would be negligible unless there was a super-solar proton event, said Charles H Jackman, an atmospheric physicist at the US space agency's Goddard Flight Center..."

"...certainly no more radiation than what is observed at the poles, where the field lines currently dip."

Plate movement will be affected?! Where are you getting that idea from? Plate movements are governed by thermal convection in the earth's mantle.

Are you seriously suggesting a pole reversal, which takes thousands of years, would send us to the stone age?

David, I've travelled a short distance along this path before.

Mr. Roquerre is a troll, with more interest in stirring up the pot than in being well-informed or considering opposing views.

'nuff said.

Oh, also David, did you notice the reference to Teutonic plate movements? ROFLOL! Priceless!

I guess the movement of Germanic dinnerware has a lot more more significance than I thought :-) ...could lead to the end of civilization!

Ah, that just looks like he let his spell-checker run wild.

My favorite was the spell-checker in Claris MacWrite II - it seemed to assume that I was more interested in spelling the names of Fortune 500 companies than common desert shrubs: whenever I tried to write "manzanita" I had to fend off its offering of "Monsanto" as a suggested 'correction'...
