CB Model Pro

Well strange things indeed SW have another product out there in disguise. After CosmicBlobs comes CB Model Pro

are these things? diversification? cunning beta testing for future incorporation? failed projects? programmers lunchtime doodles?

Neil,

Yup,,, seems to be true.

Funny though, they advertise it as a freeform "surfacing" program, but it's just a polymesh modeler. They also claim it's for industrial design and it's "compatible". Compatible with what ?? If it's a polymesh modeler it's not "compatible" with any production design software, not any, including Solidworks.

Sheese !! What a joke.

News of this popped up on the Blender forum but I wasn't aware it existed at all. Seems like they haven't publicised it or maybe I just missed it. Apparently you can't import files larger than 100kb and the tools are fairly basic but speedy. I downloaded it for a look see but haven't tried it yet. I guess it has novelty value. Is this the same as cosmic blobs but with a different GUI? It's hard to see where this fits into the bigger picture. I guess you could use it with scan to 3D surface fitting tools for unusual shapes... If you could work quickly inside SW with it to make concepts and then have SW fit real geometry to it could be useful I guess.

Seems to be 100% same s**t as Cosmic Blobs, except with _less_ features. The only difference is the ability to export the model. In the website it is mentioned that you can create normal maps with cmbodelpro. Normal maps are very important in models created for 3D computer games (they can reduce mesh size quite radically). But who has needed normal maps in industrial design? Well, sometimes they talk about "gaming industry", so maybe it is justified to say that CBModelPro is for industrial design... 'duh!

I guess they screwed up with Cosmic Blobs by choosing a wrong customer segment (kids -> not enough money?), and now they want to fix that error by creating a kewl UI for young nerds in the - uh - gaming industry.
