Making grass

(No, wise guy, not talking about smokin' da rope)

Eureka! I have found it! The way to make grass.

Actually, I had the materials laying around for years, but finally tried it.

All ya gotta do is dye white velvet a nice grass color, using ordinary (at least in the US) Rit dye.

I'm still playing with the color: "Kelly green" is a bit too dark. But dang--it really does look like grass! Has that shimmery, undulating quality that a nice unmown field of grass has.

Onward!

Grass isn't a single colour! Even nice even lawns are a different colour underneath to on top, generally yellow or browner underneath than watered lawn is on top and it shows through. Rough or wild grass has even greater variation, black, brown, yellow and assorted greens.

I'd suggest dying your fabric a light yellow and then do quick dying dips into a variety of greens afterwards, a bit like old hippie tie-dying but aiming for a much much smaller patterning. Even painting on some darker greens might be good.

Greg Procter spake thus:

Point taken: if the color is too uniform, it'll look like, well, dyed fabric. Actually, I discovered by accident that if you make the dyebath really, really strong, you can just dip the fabric in for a few seconds for a permanent dye. So you can easily brush on dabs of different color.
