Injection pressures (Diesel)

I'm having a bit of trouble with slow running on my Field Marshall (Diesel

2-stroke) - it varies up and down quite a bit, and was wondering if the injector might need rebuilding and setting up. (somebody who has a couple said it could be the problem)

Like my CS 6-1 the injector has an adjustment for the 'cracking' or opening pressure. I've been playing with the 6-1 and backed the 'cracking' pressure right off and discovered that it made sod all difference to the running of the thing! (I've reset it to the previous adjustment)

So the question is - What is the reason for this cracking pressure and why do manufacturers specify a specific value when it appears to make little difference? (on the CS anyway)

TIA Julian.

Without the preset injector pressure compression from the cylinder can force air back down the injector into the pump and stop the engine, also if the setting is too low the fuel will not atomise properly and can effectively advance the injection timing and if it's too high can stop fuel delivery altogether or effectively retard the injection timing. The engine wouldn't run very well under load either way but no doubt you were playing with the adjustment whilst running and under no-load conditions where you probably would not notice much difference unless you were just starting the engine.
