What is the difference between 2 stroke and 4 stroke?

Found on Answers.com "the world's leading Q&A site":-

ok a 4 stroke engine dosent need lubricating oil. the oil is at the bottom of the piston pit, so the piston goes down [ 1 stroke] and lubricates itself. it come up again [ 2 ] and goes down a second time to let the petrol in, going up again to ignite the petrol. this means it has slower acceleration, higher max speed, and you dont mix lubricating oil with the fuel.

a 2 stroke engine has the lubrication oil already mixed with the fuel [ done manualy] and so it cits the first 2 strokes of a 4 stroke down up repeat.

Oh Dear!

I think all of that was the question rather than the answer, surely? ;-) (is 'cits' some new-fangled technichal term?)

The original question was posed by a prospective moped owner wondering whether he should go for a 2 or 4 stroke. Not sure that this answer will have assisted the decision making process much, but I did rather like the image of the piston nipping downstairs to 'the pit' to get itself nice and oily before proceeding to the serious business of making power!

It's been 'dumbed down' to "Suck, Squeeze, Bang, Blow".
