EPS Styrofoam source in so Cal?

Question

I would like to cut a foam wing, but can't seem to find a source for a block of foam in southern Calif. Phone books and google don't seem to help. The craft stores have the crunchy open cell stuff that is useless. The home improvement store have big sheet of the extruded stuff and only 1 1/2" thick. Any sources? Thanks Earle

Being frugal and just starting out in modeling, I use the pink sheathing foam from Home Depot. Using a craft spray adhesive, I just laminate the foam to get the thickness I need. If you don't want to laminate, you might try commercial insulation or roofing firms. Both use thicker foam, though I don't know what type.

BTW, I've found that Formica (scrap from local cabinet shops) makes good patterns for hot wire cutting. It takes the heat of the wire better than wood and doesn't act as a heat sink the way metal patterns do. Also, I use a metal cutting blade in a band saw to cut the foam to size before using the hot wire to shape it.

I'm curious... What kind of wing/model are you building that you need foam over 1 1/2 inches thick?

Call an insulation company, or a company that builds walk-in refrigeration units.  A lot of those guys use thick sheets of white foam.Earle wrote:

Many of these companies receive their foam in large blocks (4'x4'x8' or even larger) and can cut any thickness that you need.
