Drill/tap machine is just that...for drilling and tapping. It is not designed for any type of heavy metal removal other than drilling. It will not be rigid enough for much side loading of the tools as is most often done in a VMC. A VMC is made primarily for removing metal with cutting tools, 90% of it's life is spent with an end mill of some sort in the spindle. It just happens to be able to drill and tap also.
