Commando sockets - Colour codes

May 04, 2004 3 Replies

I need to differentiate between UPS and non-UPS protected sockets in a computer room. All of the sockets are 16A commando type (IEC 309), I could just label them but wanted to know whether it was possible to buy sockets in non-standard colours or does this go against the principles of IEC 309 ? Painting them isn't an option !!

Pass and seymore colors their IEC309s based on voltage so you probably need to go another way to avoid confusion. Can you just stencil "UPS" on the covers with spray paint before you install them? That is probably the easiest way to go.

You can buy them in different colours but as the different colours are intended for different voltages they will be keyed differently and will not be physically interchangeable.

IEC 309-series wiring devices are internationally standardized and intended for [up to high-abuse/corrosive] industrial and commercial environments. IEC

309-1 are Euro voltages (generally 50Hz) and 309-2 are North-American voltages {primarily 60Hx} in 16-125(200)-ampere ratings in a two-to-five-pin configuration. They have been around for a couple of decades. One US-vendor?s pdf literature is http://63.90.33.38/wiring/catalogpages/section-e.pdf {Note clockface ground-pin orientation.} "The voltage is determined by the location of the female ground contact relative to the housing key-way.?
