Finally got around to trying stone on my little 10w desktop unit. Grabbed a flat grey pebble from the garden, cleaned it up, and ran a small design at around 1000mm/min with full power. The engraving came out but it's really faint, kind of a light grey ghost of the design. You can only see it clearly if the light hits it at the right angle.
Is that just the limit of what 10w can do on stone, or am I running it wrong? I figured stone would react differently than wood since there's nothing to burn, but I expected at least some contrast. Tried two passes and it barely made a difference, so blasting it more doesn't seem to be the answer. Someone suggested painting the engraved lines afterwards and wiping the excess off the surface, which sounds easy enough. Would that work on a rough stone surface, or does the paint just stay stuck everywhere and look messy? Also curious if there's a certain type of paint or ink that works better for this, or if I should just keep the design simple and accept the subtle look.
