Where ever you want to firm up fibrefrax or similar, it helps to stick the fibres together and stiffen it. Good for upto about 900C IIRC although I've seen it used higher.

A bit of heat on the epoxy, and a wire brush will clean up the brass. To get better adhesion to the glass, prep that surface with water glass type adhesive (sodium silicate). Almost any good glue will bond to that.

For aesthetics, it might be a good idea to use a pigmented glue; brass will turn green or brown, and change the knob appearance if there's no other color from the glue. You can stir paint pigments into most glues without hurting the bond.

Back to that huh?

Actually, there's another good solution out there. It's not quite as permanent as sodium silicate, but artisans use it to glue glass bowls to glass and brass candle-sticks to form goblet-like forms.

It's the clear acrylic solvent-based caulk you can get at the home stores and ACE hardware (in a transparent tube, so you can see how clear it really is).

The stuff is tenaciously sticky, flows well so that it's self- leveling, and flexible enough to "give" a little under stress, so it's less likely to part with the workpiece.

Sodium Silicate is sold as stove gasket glue, in small bottles. It is also used in the ceramics hobby.
