Interferance fit

How much material should I leave for an interferance fit?

I need to make a part for my mortiser. It's a shaft that is used to move the table left/right. The hand wheel is a press fit with a keyway. The diameter is about 5/8" with the rest of the shaft being 3/4". I lost the original shaft a couple of days ago and for the life of me can't find it.

Also, the shaft has a gear which will be on it that has a taper pin. The only taper pin drill bits I've found have been McMaster at $60+. Any other sources and can it be drilled to match the gear? The gear also has a set screw so I think I can live without it.

Thanks,

Marty

You'll come out much cheaper buying a taper pin reamer in the size number that matches the pin. For a press fit bushing of 5/8" dia, back when I installed them every day, the USAF T.O called out, I believe, a .0003" to .001" interferance. If you have the ability to heat the handwheel, I'd suggest .0007" interferance. Maybe more if you can also chill the shaft on dry ice. (I wish I could have used any of the above techniques when I had to R&R a pulley on my trucks power steering box.) Steve Monroe
