Source for oddball tap? 3/8-20 LH

After much catalog browsing and Googling I'm yelling 'Uncle'

Does anyone know a source for hand taper taps in 3/8-20 Left Hand? HSS preferred.

Get in touch with a machinist supply house and have a special made. Good chance that Widell will be the maker. You can contact them direct but they will want to bill you through a tool house anyway. If you don't know of a tool house that will help you find some locally. Probably cost about $80-90.

That's close to 9mm x 1.25. Are you sure it's SAE?....Paul

I've had something similar done with a special in chasers for a Geometric die head. I called up MSC, and said that "I saw that they had some sizes of chasers, but not the particular size I wanted. Did they have other sizes in stock, or could they order them?"

They called around to makers (wound up with TRW) and put me on a conference call to make sure that I got exactly what I needed. Resulting cost for a set of special chasers for a 5/16" die head was about the same as the cost of standard chasers for a 3/4" die head, so I figured that it was not that bad at all.

Of course -- the MSC route probably makes more sense if you are in the US. I didn't think to check back-thread to make sure of that.

Good Luck, DoN.
