Stalled Dremel == broken Dremel

Hi,



I know the quick and probably right solution is just to get another Dremel, but I thought I'd ask anyway.



I have a homebuilt CNC router (trim router and Dremel capable) with not exactly a perfectly flat bed. I was grinding a pattern into a garden paver stone with a 1/2" wet diamond grinding bit and I got a bit too aggressive on the depth. Needless to say I stalled out the Dremel and it's dead now. My question is "What exactly did I fry in the Dremel?"



This is more a curiosity question than a repair question.

If it still turns smoothly and easily, you could have fried the speed control, activated an internal protective device, burnt out a wire/winding, or cooked a brush.

If it doesn't turn or scrapes, perhaps a magnet broke.

A long time ago, I fried a single speed dremel. Took it apart, replaced the switch and a four way diode bridge, and it still runs. YMMV.

If it is an adjustable speed model, there is a surface-mounted triac (BT134) on a small circuit board inside the dremel. Very easy to replace, as it is a relatively large part, and doesn't cost more than about 1 usd. Yes, I've repaired a dremel once by replacing that part.

Of course, it might be something else, but opening the dremel is anyway necessary, and once open, you can see the PCB, measure the motor windings etc. So, do a reversable autopsy to your dremel! :)

Do it anyway... I had a Dremel that got used with a flexible drive in the toolpost of the lathe. When it stopped I thought I had diagnosed the problem as the speed controller. I got a replacement (not too steep). When that didn't work I looked much closer and found that one of the field wires was fatigued off at the IDC connector that it was pressed into. I unwound one turn from the winding to get enough length and re-connected it. It ran perfectly with both controllers thereafter. My conclusion was that Dremels are not designed to take the vibration that they produce.

Definitely worth doing the autopsy.

I just had a dremel fail at work, Upon take down, we found there was a plastic part and a seperate spring that had both failed. I called Dremel about parts and was very pleasantly surprised by both how helpful and courteous the customer support folks were and how very cheap the parts were!
